The culms of this bamboo are golden with contrasting bright green grooves and the leaves have an occasional yellow stripe. One spectacular part is the rosy red tinting on the young culms and sun exposed old culms.
The new shoots emerge with purple sheaths that show yellow internodes as the shoots elongate. It is quite showy and tropical looking for such a hardy bamboo. It is one of the best choices for a screen because it is very erect and has tightly spaced culms all the way to the ground.
